History of the Band

The Barlby Foot-Tappers Wind Band was formed in 1990. Originally named The Hilltop Foot-Tappers the band comprises of children aged 9 – 24 years living in the Barlby / Selby area in North Yorkshire. From starting out with 5 youngsters, the band can now boast a 35+ strong team!

“FOOT-TAPPERS” was chosen as it reflects the type of music we play – if you can’t tap your feet and sing along – then we don’t play it. We like audiences to join in and be part of the performance.

In 1999 we were invited to be the Selby-Carentan twinning band, and enjoyed a successful visit to our twin town in 2000.

From humble beginnings the popularity of the band has spread to the extent that, on average, we perform over 30 times each year. The band has enjoyed 8 highly successful European concert tours to; Germany, France (including a performance in Euro Disney), Greece and Ireland.

Performing in public is our forte. In 1999 we were invited to play at the Reunion / Dedication Ceremony for 578 Bomber Squadron, Burn. A true honour linking the youth of today with the courage of a past generation. In May 2004 we provided music for the 60th reunion celebrations in Selby Abbey and at Burn Airfield. Here we recorded a CD featuring the 578 Squadron March composed by band member Allan Froy.

May 2007 saw the band play not only in the moving service in Selby Abbey, but at the evenings dinner dance. During the evening, the 578 Squadron Association presented a painting of a Halifax MZ519LK-U leaving Burn for the last time in June 1944. The note read "Presented in May 2007 by the 578 Squadron Burn Association to Andrew Joy and his Barlby Foot-Tappers Band. In grateful appreciation of the friendship, interest and skilful support so freely given at the squadron reunion events over the past 10 years". A truly moving day was had by all.

In contrast we have taken part in the Lord Mayor‘s Parade in York winning the ‘Best Band’ trophy 1999.

In recent years we have helped to raise money for children of Magila in Africa, Selby Senior PHAB Club, RNLI, Hearing Dogs For The Deaf, Selby Abbey Church and many other churches in the surrounding area.
